Menorca Popular Festivities

Written by

Menorca Popular Festivities are a centuries-old tradition that have their origin in Sant Juan Festivals, that are celebrated in Ciutadella since the 14th century.

The main protagonist of the celebrations is the horse. Riders (called 'Caixers'), dressed in white and black, go on horseback through the streets of the town, and celebrate the traditional jaleo. In the commotion the riders will enter the town square and go through the crowd showing their skills and making horses jump to the rhythm of the typical songs of the holidays, especially one jot well known in the region that is interpreted by a band of local music. The excited crowd blows up the horses as a symbol of power and nobility. After the commotion of the second day, we proceed to the delivery of cane to caixers by the authorities and eventually fired.

The drink that is drunk at parties is the ointment, which is a mixture of Menorca gin with lemonade.
